Introduction

The development goal of the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) is to become a pro-industry university of science and technology. To comply with and implement the development goal of NKUST, the research and development goal of this department has been defined as “Research and Development of Industrial Technology with 30% forward-looking vision and 70% practical application.” The human and physical resources devoted to research in this department are divided into three major groups: electronics, communications, and information. The key research directions for each group are as follows:
In recent years, the government has actively promoted the IC industry and the development of thin-film transistor related devices. The demand for expertise in semiconductor and optoelectronic components will be very high in the future. To meet the demand for technology development and expertise in the optoelectronics, semiconductor and IC design, the following areas are selected as the research and development focus of this group:
- (A) Electrical properties of materials used in electronic components.
- (B) Electrical properties of the electronic components themselves.
- (C) Research on photoelectric display components.
- (D) Electronic circuits, systems, and analog IC design.
In recent years, with the 5G communications, the internet of things (IoT), the artificial intelligence (AI), and the virtual/augmented reality (AR/VR), the telecommunication services have subverted the past experience model. The combination of information and communication technology (ICT) and biomedical technology has become an important star industry in the 21st world. To meet the demand for technology development and expertise in the ICT and biomedical industries, the following areas are selected as the research and development focus of this group:
- (A) Design of smart systems.
- (B) Systems and applications of IoT.
- (C) Theory and practice of medical engineering.
- (D) Wireless communication technology.
- (E) Design of antenna and microwave engineering.
- (F) Optical fiber communication technology.
- (G) Signal processing technology.
- (H) New-generation mobile communication and security technology.
Taiwan’s information industry, such as the manufacturing of personal computers and their peripheral components, occupies an important position in the world market. In light of this, long-term fostering and training provided by the school in software design is essential. To meet the demand for technology development and expertise in the information industry, the following areas are selected as the research and development focus of this group:
- (A) Research on the design of VLSI (very large-scale integration).
- (B) Research on biomedical engineering and bioinformatics.
- (C) Research on multimedia signal processing and AI systems.
- (D) Research on e-commerce and database management systems.
