In 1963, the government established the Taiwan Provincial Kaohsiung Industrial College on Jiangong Road in Sanmin District, Kaohsiung City, to support national economic development and cultivate industrial technical talent. In 1969, the school established the Department of Electronic Engineering and offered a five-year daytime junior college program. Subsequently, a two-year daytime junior college program, a two-year nighttime junior college program, and a two-year continuing education program were added. In 1979, following Kaohsiung's elevation to a municipality, the school was renamed the Kaohsiung Municipal Industrial College. In 1981, it became the National Kaohsiung Industrial College. In 1997, to cultivate high-level electronic technology talent to support national development and high-tech industries, our university was upgraded to the National Kaohsiung Institute of Science and Technology. The undergraduate program was restructured into the Department of Electronic Engineering. Subsequently, programs were established: a two-year daytime undergraduate program, a four-year daytime undergraduate program, a two-year evening undergraduate program, a two-year continuing education college, and a four-year evening undergraduate program.

In 2000, our university was upgraded to the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences. In 2004, the Graduate School of Electronics and Information Technology was renamed the Master's Program in the Department of Electronic Engineering. In 2006, our university established the College of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, encompassing the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Electronics Engineering, the Department of Computer Science, and the Institute of Optical Communications. The department, previously part of the College of Engineering, was restructured to the College of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. In 2007, the doctoral program in the Department of Electronic Engineering was established, offering a comprehensive undergraduate, master's, and doctoral program. In 2018, the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, the National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, and the National Kaohsiung University of Marine Science and Technology merged to form the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology.
