History
In response to national economic development and the cultivation of technical professionals, the Taiwan Provincial Kaohsiung Industrial College was established in 1963 on Jiangong Road, Sanmin District, Kaohsiung City. In 1969, the Department of Electronic Engineering was founded, initially offering a five-year daytime junior college program. This was followed by the successive establishment of two-year junior college programs for both daytime and evening students, as well as a two-year continuing education program. Following Kaohsiung's upgrade to a municipality in 1979, the school was reorganized as the Kaohsiung Municipal Industrial College, and subsequently renamed the National Kaohsiung Industrial College in 1981. In 1992, with the addition of commercial programs, it was renamed the National Kaohsiung Technical College.
In 1997, to cultivate high-level electronic technology professionals for national construction and high-tech industries, the school was upgraded and restructured as the National Kaohsiung Institute of Science and Technology, and the department was officially reorganized into the Department of Electronic Engineering. Over subsequent years, the department successively established two-year and four-year daytime undergraduate programs, two-year evening undergraduate programs, a two-year continuing education college, and four-year evening undergraduate programs.
In 2000, the institution was upgraded and reorganized as the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences. In 2001, the Graduate Institute of Electronics and Information Engineering established a master's program encompassing three groups: Electronics, Telecommunications, and Information. In 2004, this institute was renamed the Master's Program of the Department of Electronic Engineering. In 2006, the university established the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (later named the College of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology), incorporating the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Electronic Engineering, the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, and the Graduate Institute of Photonics and Communication; consequently, our department was transferred from the College of Engineering to this new college. In 2007, the Ph.D. program in Electronic Engineering was established, completing the department's comprehensive undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs. In 2018, the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, and National Kaohsiung Marine University merged to form the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology.
